LilDim for macOS — last updated 29 October 2026
What LilDim stores on your Mac
LilDim saves your settings (on or off, style, intensity and color for Light and
Dark mode, highlight mode, display behavior, focus ring, your pause rules and
app lists, keyboard shortcuts, and whether you finished the welcome screens)
locally on your Mac using the standard macOS preferences system. App lists are
stored as app identifiers such as com.apple.Keynote. These settings
never leave your computer. Deleting the app removes them.
How LilDim knows which window is in front
To place the dim directly behind your window, LilDim asks macOS for the list of on-screen windows: each window's number, position, size, layer and which app it belongs to. It never reads window titles or contents, and it doesn't use Screen Recording. This list is used in the moment and never stored.
Accessibility (optional)
If you choose to give LilDim Accessibility access, it uses it for exactly two things: to be told when the focused window changes, and to read that one window's position and size. With Accessibility on, it also notices when you hold the fn key, so it can lift the dim while you do. It never reads what's inside your windows, never reads what you type, and never controls other apps. LilDim works fully without this permission.
Apps you choose from the Applications folder
When you add an app to a list in Settings using Choose from Applications…, LilDim reads that app's identifier from the bundle you selected. It reads nothing else and keeps no access to the file afterwards.
Automation
Shortcuts actions, Focus Filters, AppleScript and lildim:// links only
change LilDim's own settings, on your Mac. A Focus Filter's values are applied
while the Focus is on and are not saved.
What LilDim does not do
- It does not record, capture, or photograph your screen.
- It does not request Screen Recording, Input Monitoring or Automation permissions.
- It does not read window titles, window contents, or anything you type.
- It does not connect to the internet.
- It does not include third-party SDKs, trackers, or advertising.
- It does not start at login unless you turn that on.
Children
LilDim is suitable for all ages and collects no data from anyone, including children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date. Material changes will also be described in the app's release notes on the Mac App Store.
